Our Diabetic Alert Service Dog Training
Diabetic alert dogs can benefit people of all ages who live with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, especially those who experience unpredictable blood sugar swings, hypoglycemic unawareness, or nighttime lows that are hard to catch on their own. Founder Scott Tarpley (Tom Rose School graduate) and fellow instructor Andrew Northup build individualized plans with clear milestones (e.g., foundation skills, public access readiness, and alert reliability benchmarks). Every team’s timeline looks a little different; we’ll map a realistic training schedule that fits your life and your dog’s progress.
Our service dog evaluations are breed-neutral and focus on suitability: confidence without reactivity, quick recovery from startle, desire to work with the handler, scenting drive, and comfortable neutrality in public spaces are several traits we look for. Recognizing Glucose Changes
A diabetic alert dog’s core job is detection: learning to recognize the subtle scent changes in a handler’s breath and sweat that occur during hyperglycemic (high) and hypoglycemic (low) blood sugar events. We build this recognition gradually and reinforce it across many real-world situations, so the dog responds to genuine glucose changes rather than routine or environment. For client privacy and to protect our training program, we keep the specifics of our detection methodology in-house and cover the full process during your evaluation and enrollment.
Alert & Response Behaviors
Once a dog detects a glucose change, it’s trained to give a clear, distinct alert to get the handler’s attention, then respond by retrieving a designated cooler or kit containing the handler’s medication, sugar drinks, and/or snacks. These alert and retrieval behaviors are proofed to high reliability under distraction, with defined criteria for consistency and follow-through, plus a plan to maintain performance long-term.
